A recent survey asked over 2,000 people which of the jerk characteristics would make them most likely to walk out of the door. Here are the top six reasons that people would leave a lousy boss:

  • Boss belittles people
  • Lies
  • Micromanages
  • Condescends or demeans
  • Humiliates or embarrases others
  • Acts arrogantly

The question is: what do you do with a boss who behaves in this way? This depends on how much the behavior is getting you down. If the behavior mildly irritates you and nothing more, then perhaps you should live with it. But if it is affecting your self-esteem or sense of well-being, then it is important to do something. Now, leaving your job is always an option, but it should be an option of last resort because there are jerk bosses every where. Before leaving you should consider trying the following:

  • talking to your boss about the problem
  • talking to a supervisor about the problem
  • creating a paper trail of your boss’s behavior and submitting it to HR
  • finding an ally who will stand up to your boss if he goes too far
  • finding another person to work for in the organization
