My boss never recognizes my hard work and I’m getting real pissed off. It’s not like I’m expecting some big pay raise or even a hero-cookie. All I’d like is an occasional thank-you – is that too much to ask? Last week I mentioned it to her and you know what her response was? “I don’t like to make people big-headed.” I felt like telling her to quit worrying about making my head big and start worrying about how I was going to make her head roll. I don’t need her to kiss my ass, but why can’t she just tell me when I do a good job? How can I feel some love?

There is a real shortage of honest and genuine praise in the modern workplace. You are probably not the only one who feels unappreciated. My advice to you is to go to your boss when it is clear that you have done a good job, and ask her if your work was satisfactory, or if there is anything you can improve. This will look like you are trying to do a better job, and it will also enable you to receive some praise, if there is any to be had.
